Should UAE Businesses Still Run Tally ERP 9?

Should UAE Businesses Still Run Tally ERP 9?

It opens. It posts vouchers. It prints your VAT reports. So why change a system your team knows by heart? Because "it still runs" and "it's still the right ERP for 2027" aren't the same question. Here's what Tally has actually said about Tally.ERP 9, what has changed, and how to decide for your business.

Is Tally ERP 9 Still Supported?

Partly, and the details matter. According to Tally's FAQ:

  • Feature updates have stopped. Tally says enhancements will be considered only for TallyPrime.
  • Support continues. The same FAQ says support for Tally.ERP 9 will continue.
  • Upgrading isn't compulsory. You can keep using Tally.ERP 9.

So ERP 9 hasn't been switched off. But it's frozen: you can use what it does today, and what Tally builds next goes into TallyPrime.

What Happened to TSS Renewals on 16 August 2026?

Tally's upgrade page says TSS (Tally Software Services) renewal for Tally.ERP 9 ended on 16 August 2026 for all customers. That date has passed. After it, Tally says ERP 9 users who want to renew their subscription must do so in TallyPrime.

The upgrade route depends on your history. Customers whose TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020 qualify for a free upgrade. Those whose TSS wasn't active before that date must take the paid route. Tally's page doesn't give a price, and it doesn't say whether the free route stays open after 16 August, so ask your Tally partner or Tally directly before you plan around it.

Why Are UAE Businesses Taking a Fresh Look at ERP 9?

Three reasons keep coming up.

  1. No new features. Compliance and reporting rules change, and the software that tracks them needs to keep moving.
  2. A closed subscription path. If you hold an ERP 9 serial, that is a decision point in itself.
  3. E-invoicing. The mandate starts on 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more, and on 1 July 2027 for smaller ones. Your system has to produce and exchange structured invoices through an Accredited Service Provider.

On that last point, Tally's UAE e-invoicing page says TallyPrime Release 7.2 supports UAE e-invoicing: configuration, registration, individual and bulk e-invoice generation, and an e-invoice report to check details and track status. I didn't find equivalent documentation for ERP 9. That doesn't prove ERP 9 can't be made to work with a provider or integration. It means you shouldn't assume it will.

Can You Keep Using Tally ERP 9?

For now, often yes. A short-term stay can make sense when:

  • Your workflow is stable and your reports meet your needs
  • You've confirmed your licence and support position
  • Your integrations and custom TDLs still work
  • You aren't in scope for e-invoicing yet, or you have a tested way to meet it

It's worth reviewing sooner if you're a large business facing the 1 January 2027 date, rely on custom TDLs or third-party integrations, are adding branches or product lines, or want modern reporting. The question isn't how old the software is. It's whether it covers what your business needs over the next two or three years.

Is TallyPrime Really the Better Fit?

For businesses that need current features and e-invoicing, TallyPrime is the version Tally is developing. It also keeps the familiar accounting model, so staff don't start from scratch. But a licence change alone doesn't make you compliant. Configuration, clean data and the right provider arrangement matter just as much. Tally's own e-invoicing page doesn't mention Accredited Service Providers, Peppol or PINT AE, so ask your partner exactly how your version connects to the provider you choose.

How Do You Upgrade From Tally ERP 9 to TallyPrime?

Treat it as a controlled project, not a download.

  1. Check your licence and TSS history to confirm which upgrade route applies.
  2. Back up your ERP 9 data and keep that backup. Tally's FAQ is clear that data migrated to TallyPrime can't be loaded back into ERP 9.
  3. List customisations, including TDLs, add-ons and integrations, and test each one.
  4. Migrate company by company. Tally says migration completes only if the data has no errors, so clean up first.
  5. Verify the result: ledgers, voucher counts, receivables, payables, stock and tax reports.
  6. Test your VAT workflows and review your Corporate Tax records.
  7. Check e-invoicing readiness: registration, master data, TRNs and your provider arrangement.
  8. Train your team before go-live.

So, Should You Move?

If you're in the AED 50 million group, the answer is probably "plan it now". If you're smaller, you have more time, but not unlimited time: 31 March 2027 is your provider deadline. In both cases, don't wait for a problem to force the decision. Run the checklist, test on a copy of your data, and decide with facts.

Want a Second Opinion on Your Upgrade?

Deciding is easier when someone has looked at your actual data, licence and customisations. Global Software helps UAE businesses assess their Tally.ERP 9 setup, plan the move to TallyPrime and prepare for e-invoicing, so the switch doesn't disrupt month-end.

Not sure whether to stay or upgrade? Talk to Global Software for a free ERP 9 health check.

What Are the Most Common Questions About Tally ERP 9?

Is Tally ERP 9 discontinued? No. Tally says it will keep working and that support continues. Feature updates have stopped, and TSS renewal for ERP 9 ended on 16 August 2026.

Is it compulsory to upgrade? No, according to Tally's FAQ.

Who gets the free upgrade? Per Tally's upgrade page, customers whose TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020. Others take the paid route.

Does TallyPrime support UAE e-invoicing? Release 7.2 documents UAE e-invoicing setup, registration, generation and review. Confirm your version and provider arrangement.

Will upgrading make me e-invoicing compliant? Not by itself. You still need registration, clean data and a working provider connection.

Can I go back to ERP 9 after migrating? No. Migrated data can't be loaded in ERP 9, so keep your original backup.
